tending to the fire

Date

Feb - July 2026

Location

Little Havana

Tending to the Fire begins with one of humanity’s oldest turning points: the origin of fire. From the moment we chose to move closer to the flame instead of running away, everything changed. Fire became more than survival; it became ritual, protection, and a reflection of the human spirit.

Through this new body of work, Gonzalez reflects on fire not only as a physical force, but as a living energy that exists within all of us—a symbol of passion, transformation, intuition, and presence. The artist explores the idea that life itself requires tending, and that the things which give us purpose must be continuously nurtured. Like a flame, our inner drive can dim through routine and distraction.

Using natural dyes and oils on raw canvas, the artist creates immersive worlds consumed by warmth, movement, and light. Handcrafted mahogany frames and uniquely shaped canvases extend beyond presentation, becoming sculptural forms themselves, windows into emotional and spiritual landscapes.

The installation titled “Intention Altar” is an interactive activation allowing viewers to light candles and set an intention. Made from found materials such as sand, stone, and natural wax candles, it becomes a communal space where energy is directed, exchanged, and shared.
